Andrea Smilanich

Andrea SmilanichFrom the first day I started my tax internship with Lurie Besikof Lapidus & Company, LLP I truly felt welcomed by everyone. This environment set the stage for a rewarding learning experience from the beginning. Throughout the Tax Department's busy season, I was able to work hands-on with all types of projects and returns (both business and individual). The ability to work on projects and returns firsthand gave me the opportunity to apply my knowledge from school to my work-related environment. This would not have been possible without the kindness and guidance from my mentor and fellow co-workers. Their willingness to fully explain certain issues that arose allowed me to not only finish my tasks at hand but understand why those changes were necessary. I could not have asked for a more rewarding and educational experience.

Andrew Reckard

Andrew ReckardMy internship at Lurie Besikof Lapidus & Company, LLP provided me with an experience that few college students are able to attain: hands-on experience during tax season. I prepared both business and individual tax returns, completed research projects, and was involved in weekly tax team meetings.

My day-to-day activities varied because each return was different. I enjoyed coming to work each day knowing that the return I'd work on that day could be different than the day before, due to the size of the company or the individual's income and the amount of time needed to properly prepare a return. Albeit intimidating at first, the 2009 tax season taught me a lot, especially since my supervisors were always present to answer questions and provide feedback. These day-to-day activities taught me several valuable lessons including time management and working within a deadline (April 15th).

One of the firm's best assets is the people who work there. All employees – from the preparers to the partners – were always willing to help answer questions and help solve problems. They always had a positive and professional attitude, even when the stress of a busy tax season crept closer. I was also really impressed with their ability to remain patient with me as I continued to learn and grow as a young professional. They never just gave me the answers; they made sure I understood the reasoning and the result of every decision. I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Lurie Besikof Lapidus & Company, LLP, and because of it I am now certain that I belong in public accounting.
